Ocean Beach School is an embracing, neighborhood environment where teachers, families, and the community come together to ensure students Catch the Wave to Success!  We are pleased to announce that the California Department of Education has named our school a 2008 CA Distinguished School. 

Celebrating our 100th year in 2009, Ocean Beach Elementary is a small school with remarkable community support. We are located just three blocks from the beach in an urban area of the city of San Diego. The community of Ocean Beach embraces small, family-run businesses, supports local artists, conservation, recycling, and organic food choices, has an open-mindedness that welcomes diversity of its residents, supports charitable causes that better the community and it’s people, and accepts the responsibility for maintaining it’s shared resource—the local coastline.

Staff members, parents, and community collaborate to bring vivid and diverse life experiences into the process of educating every child at Ocean Beach. We are committed to providing a well-rounded educational experience that encompasses academics, health and fitness, the arts, and awareness of our community and coastal environment.  Scout troops hold meetings in our classrooms, Parks and Recreation offers after school sports and arts classes, and numerous parent, university and high school ROP volunteers work side-by-side with our students and teachers in classrooms. Students learn about nutrition from our Community Partner in Education, O.B. People’s Food Cooperative, and explore marine science with our Partner Sea World and Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Our staff members and families are actively involved in the shared-leadership model with a strong voice in the decision making process through our Site Governance Team, School Site Council, PTA, curriculum, behavior and activity committees.

Everyone knows what it means to Catch the Wave to Success at Ocean Beach School!  Our Positive Behavior Support (PBS) Plan is at the heart of our school’s high expectations for student success.  Monthly themes of self-discipline, determination, positive attitude, respect, friendship, responsibility, enthusiasm, team spirit and personal best permeate our classrooms, hallways and conversations.  Parents and teachers alike stop students to congratulate them for Catching the Wave!

When one arrives here, you cannot help but appreciate our beautiful campus and welcoming spirit. Our children benefit from a new library, internet connected computer lab, and a state-of-the-art auditorium.  Kindergartners and upper grade students tend two gardens and have access to a well-equipped playground.  The ocean surrounds our students through our Ocean Beach and Undersea Murals, and our child-created tile mural:  Catch the Wave to Success – The AB Seas of Ocean Beach School!    

We have many exciting learning opportunities and activities for our children. We encourage all children to reach their highest potential and Catch the Wave to Success! Our goal for our students is to ensure a safe environment while reaching high standards through positive learning experiences. It is our desire to instill a love of learning while fostering a respect for diversity, parent involvement, and an understanding of community. Everyone at Ocean Beach works together to inspire a community of learners. We have creative, dedicated teachers, a caring support staff, a family friendly office staff, involved parents, and wonderfully creative and intelligent children.
